Release by Petrochem Inspection Services 2003-01-17, Petrochem Inspection Services - PetroChem Inspection Services Announces Research Award from DOT PetroChem Inspection Services receives DOT funding to further develop pipeline inspection technique. The need to assure the safety of buried high-pressure transmission pipeline is well-recognized by government and industry alike but technology to do so is limited. Using long-range guided wave ultrasound, PetroChem intends to enhance its current technology.January 4, 2002 – Houston, Texas. PetroChem Inspection Services announced it has been selected as a successful bidder on a research project funded by the US Department of Transportation to further develop inspection techniques for pipelines using long-range ultrasound. Working with PetroChem will be researchers from Penn State University as well as Plant Integrity, an affiliate of The Welding Institute (UK), who funded the original development of the ultrasonic device.
The safety of high-pressure transmission pipelines in the USA has been a source of industry and governmental concern for the past several years following a transmission pipeline explosion in a residential area. With an estimated 2.1 million miles of high-pressure line in the USA, pipeline safety legislation calling for routine inspection of the nation’s gas distribution system is now pending before Congress.
Because much of the line is buried, and therefore inaccessible for routine inspection, the need for new and improved inspection techniques is well understood. Internal inspection tools (smart pigs) are used where they can be accommodated: however, DOT statistics indicate that 30% of the pipelines in the United States cannot be inspected using smart pigs. Scott Lebsack, VP of PetroChem Inspection Services, said, “PetroChem has been in the forefront of using long-range ultrasonic inspection as a technique to detect pipeline corrosion. The objective of this research project is to improve and/or enhance a non-intrusive nondestructive technology already in use for pipeline inspections.”
PetroChem Inspection Services provides inspection personnel and equipment to refineries, chemical plants, energy producers, and pipeline transmission/distribution companies. Privately held, PetroChem is based in Houston, Texas with offices in Corpus Christi, Louisiana, the Mid-West, and the East Coast.
